Koda for a stronger music scene

New strategy to future-proof Koda and help build a stronger music ecosystem

Koda launches a new business strategy covering the next five years. The strategy aims to ensure that Koda adapts to the complex challenges currently facing the industry, while at the same time contributing to build a stronger and more sustainable music scene.

‘Koda for a stronger music scene’. That is the title of Koda’s new strategy, setting the direction for the organisation’s work in the next five years. Koda is built on an incredible foundation, and for close to 100 years, Koda has successfully worked to ensure that composers, songwriters and music publishers get paid when their music is used.

While the core objective remains the same today, the challenges involved have become more complex. The world is changing, and through a series of analyses, Koda has established what challenges the organisation must respond to, in order to continue the organisation’s growth for the benefit of its members – composers, songwriters and music publishers. Accordingly, the board and the management of Koda spent much of the COVID pandemic working on an ambitious strategy for the future of Koda, which includes several new focus areas.

Our industry is rapidly evolving, and at present we are already facing several complex challenges.

Gorm Arildsen

"Looking at Koda’s market position in the industry and our level of member satisfaction, things are actually going pretty well. So why do we even need a new strategy? We need it, because our industry is rapidly evolving, and at present we are already facing several complex challenges, to which we must adapt. This applies to technology, sustainability, growing competition and, not least, increasing pressure from the international tech giants. Consequently, our new strategy will focus on creating a more attractive member experience, contributing to a more sustainable music scene, building international partnerships and strengthening both our technological foundation and the regulatory and political framework conditions for our members," says CEO of Koda, Gorm Arildsen.

As a result, Koda will, among other things, invest in modernising the systems used to distribute the revenues collected, while also taking steps to develop and update the organisation’s digital interfaces. At the same time, Koda will take a proactive role in the work to promote a more sustainable music scene and prioritise efforts within the political and legal field. All of this to ultimately secure financial growth and better conditions for the benefit of Koda’s members.

New strategy requires more hands and a reorganisation

The substantial task ahead will require more personnel as well as changes to the Koda organisation. Koda will create twelve new positions in the organisation over the course of 2023, that will primarily contribute to the technological development projects. At the same time, Koda has also implemented several organisational changes as of January 1st 2023.

Director of Legal at Koda, Dicle Duran Nielsen, has been promoted to Director of Legal and Political Affairs and now holds overall responsibility for the departments: Legal, Communication, Public Affairs and Sustainability. Head of Media Relations at Koda, Mads Scheuer, has taken over management of the communications department. Director of Broadcast and Online licensing, Kaare Struve, has had his responsibilities expanded to also include the area of strategy. As Director of Media licensing and Strategy, he will serve an important role in the continued development of Koda.

It goes without saying that everything we do is aimed at building a better future for our members.

Loui Törnqvist

The management team at Koda has been further strengthened with the addition of Mette Vestergaard Andersen as new Director of Business Development. Furthermore, four new team leaders have also been appointed in Koda to ensure efficient strategy execution.

‘I am pleased that we have now adopted an ambitious strategy on behalf of our members. The aim is to grow and future-proof Koda, while also playing a key role in strengthening and improving the industry of which we are part. It goes without saying that everything we do is aimed at building a better future for our members – both in terms of ensuring fair and better remuneration, but also in terms of improving equality and general well-being in the industry they have put their hearts and souls into,’ says the chair of Koda’s board, Loui Törnqvist.
