September distribution 2022

September distribution 2022

Koda’s September 2022 distribution takes place on Thursday 15 September. For a full overview of the areas and performance periods included, see the Koda distribution schedule.

TV and Radio

The September distribution covers all TV and radio areas where distributions are made monthly. While it primarily concerns performances in June, in several areas you will also find that performances from July have already been reported, processed and are ready for distribution.  Furthermore, the September distribution includes monthly distributions for music used in commercials on channels such as TV3 +, National Geographic and Eurosport 1.

The September distribution also includes revenues generated during Q1 of 2022 on TV2’s regional channels, all of 2021 on Eurosport 2 and the first half of 2022 on Greenlandic radio.

First performance awards

Koda now distributes first performance awards for musical works performed in 2021. Starting with this distribution, a threshold has been set on when a first performance award is paid out. This threshold means that first performance awards are only paid out when the original performance within a specific distribution area has a value of more than DKK 100.

The changed terms and conditions for first performance awards were introduced as a result of a decision made at Koda’s general meeting in 2020, and the changes are necessary in order for Koda to comply with the international confederation CISAC’s guidelines and requirements for transparency, equal treatment and objective criteria.

As part of these changes, the total amount for first performance awards will be gradually reduced over a period of several years, which is why the above threshold been implemented for first performances in 2021.

HBO, Netflix and other online platforms

After lengthy proceedings, Koda has finally received reporting from HBO containing consumption information about the films and series shown on the service. The information provided constitutes full reporting for the entire agreement period 2013–2021, which has now been processed and matched to music information in Koda’s cue-sheet database.

The VOD area also includes distributions covering Netflix (Q4 2021), C-More VOD (2021) and the area VOD Other for 2021, where data from YouSee/Blockbuster is reused for the distribution of revenues generated from smaller film rental services. In addition, the September distribution includes an annual distribution for music in podcasts 2021 and for music composed for websites 2021.

Music streaming and SoMe – First distribution for Facebook and Instagram

This September, Koda makes its first-ever distribution for music used on Meta’s digital platforms (Facebook, Instagram, etc.). The distribution is based on music reporting received from Meta for the period July 2019 up to and including September 2021, generated via Meta’s music reporting system. The reporting contains the tracks that music distributors have licensed to Meta and which Meta has subsequently included in their ‘Music Libraries’ and monitored across their various products and platforms.

The agreement with Meta was entered into via the joint Nordic licensing hub Polaris and covers digital music use throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The societies in the Polaris Hub (TONO, TEOSTO and Koda) have chosen a processing method where, for cost reasons, consumption data from the territories Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany and Great Britain is processed and used as the basis for the distribution.

Within the field of music streaming, the September distribution includes quarterly distributions for streaming services such as Spotify, Apple and YouTube. Note that the distributions for Spotify and YouTube also include direct distributions for the use of Koda members’ works in other European countries. For an overview of the specific services and periods covered, see the Koda distribution schedule.

Concerts

Regarding concerts, the September distribution covers all concerts where the music reporting has been processed and completed and where Koda has received all necessary information from the concert promoter (for example about ticket revenues per concert). This time, the area includes distributions for several major festivals held in June 2022, including Heartland, Tinderbox and Copenhell.

Returned shares and Blank audio and video media

The September distribution includes distributions of shares returned from Koda’s sister societies abroad. These are funds which have, due to errors in the documentation of rightsholders, initially been paid out to incorrect societies abroad and subsequently returned to Koda in accordance with established practice. The returned shares have been reviewed and corrected by Koda and are now distributed in accordance with correct rightsholder documentation.

The September distribution also covers remuneration for Blank audio and video media 2022.
