January 2021

Koda's January distribution 2021 took place Thursday 21 January. For a full overview of the areas and performance periods covered, see the Koda distribution schedule

Monthly distributions for TV and Radio

The January distribution covers performances in October and parts of November 2020 for all TV and radio areas where distributions are made monthly. It also includes monthly distributions for music used in commercials on channels such as TV3+, TV3 Puls, National Geographic and Eurosport 1.

Extra distribution for DR channels covering the period 2015–18

The January distribution includes an extra distribution for the use of music on DR’s TV and radio channels during the period 2015 to 2018. The distribution is made as the result of a ruling made by the Copyright Licence Tribunal (Ophavsretslicensnævnet) in a long-running case between Koda and DR, which reached its end in October last year. The tribunal’s ruling means that Koda has received payment for past music use on DR’s flow channels and digital platforms covering the period 2015 to 2018. These funds are now ready for distribution. The payment is made on the basis of previously processed reporting from DR’s TV and radio channels during the period in question.

Danish TV productions sold abroad

The January distribution includes payment for music used on Danish TV productions sold abroad during the period 2015 to 2019. These are mechanical royalties that Koda manages on behalf of NCB and which are paid out on the basis of reports on sold productions received from DR.

Concerts

As far as concerts are concerned, the January 2021 distribution includes all concerts where full reporting has been submitted and processed and where Koda has received all necessary information from the concert promoter (for example about ticket revenues per concert). As has previously been mentioned, the 2020 distribution rates for concerts have been reduced compared to 2019, as the Covid-19 crisis has obviously caused a marked reduction in concert activity.

Abroad

Koda regularly distributes the amounts received from sister societies abroad for the use of Koda members' music outside of Denmark. Koda’s distributions are made in keeping with the frequency and speed with which the relevant societies carry out their distributions within the various areas.

Prior to the January 2021 distribution, Koda has received a number of major quarterly settlements from several of the societies from which Koda typically receives large amounts, including Norway (TONO), Sweden (STIM), the United Kingdom (PRS) and the United States (ASCAP). The settlements received primarily cover performances from the first half of 2020, but also include amounts from previous periods.
