TV and Radio
The November distribution covers performances in August and parts of September for those TV and radio areas where distributions are made monthly.
As regards TV, the distribution also covers the period January to August 2020 on Discovery channels (Kanal 4, Kanal 5, 6'eren, Discovery Denmark etc.) as well as on the CMore channels First, Hits, Series and Starts, included here in Koda’s distributions for the first time ever. From December, all these channels will transition to monthly distributions, meaning that they will adhere to the same frequency and speed as the other monthly distribution areas.
In the field of radio, all commercial radios are once again included in the monthly distributions after being put on hold due to uncertainties about the revenue base caused by the coronavirus crisis.
As far as concerts are concerned, the November distribution includes all concerts where full reporting has been submitted and processed and where Koda has received all necessary information from the concert promoter (e.g. about ticket revenues per concert). As has previously been mentioned, the 2020 distribution rates for concerts have been reduced compared to 2019, as the coronavirus crisis has obviously caused a marked reduction in concert activity.
Distributions for music in commercials
The distribution includes music used in commercials on a number of TV channels which are uplinked from Britain, meaning that they are managed by the British society PRS. As the channels show commercials targeted at the Danish market, Koda has entered into an agreement with PRS ensuring that Koda is responsible for processing and distributing royalties for these commercials.
The distributions specifically concern music in commercials on channels such as TV3 +, TV3 Puls, National Geografic and Eurosport 1, and cover the period January to August 2020.
Koda does not have information on all the commercials featured on these channels, which means that gaps and omissions may occur in our distributions compared to the full range of broadcasts made. Accordingly, we encourage composers of music for commercials to submit additional music information (with associated media plan or clock code), which can be used to strengthen our basis for making distributions within this field.
KUVO – new data for distributions for music in discos and clubs
Koda now carries out distributions based on actual data about the music played at a number of clubs and electronic festivals. The data is received via KUVO, which is a social network for DJs, club owners and other stakeholders on the electronic music scene. KUVO has developed a device that automatically registers the music played by DJs, and the track data collected here is forwarded to Koda.
This has resulted in a distribution which includes a total of more than 10,000 unique works played in 2019 at clubs and electronic festivals that have had a KUVO device installed. These include Culture Box, Jolene, Slagteriet, Bremen Teater, Rust, Strøm Festival, Generator Festival and more.
As of 2020, KUVO data will be part of the background area ‘Music at discos and clubs’ and will supplement the existing data basis within the area.
As regards revenues from abroad, Koda has received – prior to this distribution – new quarterly settlements from sister societies in the USA (BMI and Ascap), Finland (Teosto), Norway (Tono), the Netherlands (Buma) and Canada (SOCAN). The distributions primarily cover performances from the fourth quarter of 2019 and the first quarter of 2020.
The distribution also includes an extra distribution of funds received from societies abroad which are not associated with specific works and rightsholders. These amounts are now distributed on the basis of analogous data, being shared among works and rightsholders who have previously received payment for the specific periods, territories and areas involved.
Compensation for local sub-publishing – Interactive TV services 2019
For publisher members, the November distribution includes a so-called ‘Compensation for local sub-publishing’. This distribution is generated by revenues from Interactive TV Services offered by TV distributors such as YouSee and Stofa, meaning that it differs from the compensation for local sub-publishing generated by revenues from TV distribution, which was distributed in September.
